Canyon Lake Texas was formed in 1964 when
the US Corps of Engineers impounded the
Guadalupe River upon completion of the
Canyon Dam. Canyon Lake Texas is
located approximately 30 miles northeast of
San Antonio and 20 miles northwest of New
Braunfels Texas. During the summer of
2002, excessive rain fall resulted in Canyon
Lake overflowing the spillway, resulting in
the formation of the
Canyon Lake Gorge.
Canyon Lake and the Guadalupe River are
centers of water oriented recreation in the
Canyon Lake Texas area, attracting many
thousands of visitors throughout each year.
As such, Canyon Lake Texas is considered the
water recreation capital of Texas (or at
least the Texas Hill Country).
Canyon Lake Texas is overseen and the dam
managed by the US Army Corps of Engineers.
Additionally, the Corps is charged with
management of Canyon Lake water levels in
excess of the conservation pool.
Canyon Lake Texas is a rural, unincorporated
area located in the Texas Hill Country.
(The Texas Hill Country is a region of
central Texas, including Canyon Lake, Gruene,
Enchanted Rock, Fredericksburg, Wimberly,
among other enchanting towns.)
The New York Times recommended the
Texas Hill Country as the number one summer
destination of 2008 in their article, "31
Places to Go This Summer."
